چکیده

Research on computer system resilience, indeed on dependability and security generally, suffers from fragmentation into numerous partly-overlapping communities, and inconsistencies in terminology. As a partial response to this situation, we report on the development and use of a Resilience Knowledge Base (RKB) which currently contains over 60 million information items drawn from publication repositories and funding agencies worldwide. We describe the RKB technology, showing how it can support exploration of the research space using semantic web techniques to ameliorate difficulties caused by differences in terminology. We discuss the potential for the RKB to support Resilience-Explicit Computing, in which the decision to select a tool or configure a component from among alternatives is supported using metadata-based mechanism descriptions. The RKB Explorer can identify indirect but potentially significant interrelationships not only between people, publications and projects, but also between these and information about tools, components and training materials. © 2008 University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Ontology-Based Business Knowledge for Simulating Threats to Corporate Assets

We propose a security ontology, to provide a solid base for an applicable and holistic IT-Security approach for SMEs, enabling lowcost threat analysis. Based on the taxonomy of computer security and dependability by Landwehr [ALRL04] and the threat classification according to Peltier [Pel01], a heavy-weight ontology can be used to organize and systematically structure knowledge on threats, safe...

Security Ontology: Simulating Threats to Corporate Assets

Threat analysis and mitigation, both essential for corporate security, are time consuming, complex and demand expert knowledge. We present an approach for simulating threats to corporate assets, taking the entire infrastructure into account. Using this approach effective countermeasures and their costs can be calculated quickly without expert knowledge and a subsequent security decisions will b...

A Perspective on Formal Verification

Formal methods employ mathematical techniques to prove a program satisfies its specifications. Many have stated that the use of these methods provides the only means to truly guarantee a program is dependable [4,8]. Though the use of these methods can be susceptible to human error, they will still increase the dependability of a program. Additionally, using formal methods can uncover design pro...

Dagstuhl Seminar 06371 “From Security to Dependability”

This seminar brought together researchers and practitioners from the different areas of dependability and security, in particular, from fault-tolerance, safety, distributed computing, langelanguage-based security, and cryptography. The aim was to discuss common problems faced by research in these areas, the differences in their respective approaches, and to identify research challenges in this ...
